How the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 line up for real Bowie truck work, from lake weekends and show trailers to the school run.

Park a Ford F-150 next to a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 at a feed store in Bowie and most people couldn't tell you which one hauls more. Both pull trailers, carry crews and go to work every day across Montague County. The choice usually comes down to small things you'll use every week.

So we skipped the spec table and went job by job. We sell Fords, so weigh our view with that in mind, but we've tried to be straight about what the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 does well.

Quick answer: Both are capable full size trucks. The Ford F-150 tends to fit buyers who want help at the hitch and power at the jobsite, like available Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Pro Power Onboard. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tends to fit buyers set on an available diesel. Ratings vary by configuration, so ask the team at Kory Hooks Ford in Bowie for the exact numbers on the truck you're looking at.

Which truck is easier to tow with to the lake or the stock show?

Set up right, either truck will handle a bass boat to Lake Amon G. Carter or a livestock trailer to a county show. The difference most people feel is how much help the truck gives you at the hitch and on the ramp. The Ford F-150 offers available Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which lets you steer the trailer in reverse with a knob on the dash while the truck turns the wheel.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has its own available trailering tech, including camera views that help you see around the trailer. Tow ratings on both depend on engine, axle, cab, bed and packages, so ask the team for the exact rating on the truck you're looking at.

If you back a trailer twice a year, either truck works fine. If you back one down a crowded show barn alley every spring weekend, try Pro Trailer Backup Assist first. Some people don't care for it. Others won't buy a truck without it.

Which one makes more sense as a daily work truck?

For a lot of buyers around Bowie, Decatur and Jacksboro, the truck is a tool first. It sits at a jobsite all day, rides gravel and caliche, and gets washed when somebody remembers. Both trucks come in plain work trims and both climb into leather if you want it.

The Ford feature our customers bring up most is Pro Power Onboard, available on certain Ford F-150 configurations. It's a generator built into the truck with outlets in the bed, so you can run saws or work lights without hauling a separate generator. Output varies by configuration, so confirm what the truck you're looking at has.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers an available multi flex tailgate that folds into a step and a small work surface. The Ford F-150 has an available Pro Access tailgate that swings open like a door. Open both on the lot and see which suits how you load.

Bowie driver tip

If your truck lives on US 287 between Bowie and Decatur and then turns onto a county road, ride in both trucks on rough pavement and on gravel. How the cab handles washboard on a Montague County road after a dry spell tells you more than any brochure.

Is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500's available diesel a reason to pick it?

For some buyers, yes. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers an available diesel, and drivers who put long highway miles on a half ton with a trailer behind them often like how a diesel pulls. If that's on your must have list, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 deserves a serious look.

The Ford F-150 lineup answers with gas engines, including turbocharged EcoBoost options and a V8. Fuel economy and towing figures change with each engine, cab and axle combination, so ask for the window sticker on the exact truck. A diesel also brings its own upkeep, like diesel exhaust fluid.

Think about your real week. Somebody running Bowie to Wichita Falls and back on US 287 several times a week with a trailer is a different buyer than a family that tows to Lake Nocona four weekends a summer.

Which truck works better for family duty?

Both trucks come as crew cabs with full size back seats and the comfort features families want. Pay attention to how wide the back doors open in a tight school parking lot, where the car seat anchors sit, and how quiet the cab stays at highway speed.

Bring the family to the test drive and put the car seats in both trucks. Screen layout is personal too. Some people like Ford's SYNC setup, some prefer Chevrolet's, and neither is wrong.

Fits you if

Ford F-150

  • You tow often and want available Pro Trailer Backup Assist on ramps
  • You'd use a built in generator like available Pro Power Onboard
  • You want gas engine choices to match how you drive

Fits you if

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

  • An available diesel half ton is high on your list
  • You like the available multi flex tailgate
  • You prefer Chevrolet's cab layout after driving both

How should you compare them on a test drive?

Drive them back to back, same day, same roads. Take each one out on US 287 to feel how it settles at speed, then turn onto a county road near Sunset or Alvord and listen for rattles. Back each one into a parking spot using only the cameras.

Think about your real week.

Ask what trims and packages are on the lot and what your current truck is worth. Our trade value tool gives you a starting number, and our finance department can walk you through options once you pick a truck.

Cab and Bed Questions

Do the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 come in the same cab styles?

Both offer a regular cab, an extended cab and a crew cab, with bed lengths that change by cab. What's available varies by trim and model year, so check the exact build.

Can I get a longer bed with a crew cab?

Some crew cab builds on both trucks pair with a longer bed, though not every trim offers it. Ask sales to pull up the builds you want.

Are the two trucks built from the same materials?

They aren't. The Ford F-150 uses an aluminum alloy body and bed, while the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 uses a steel bed. Owners on both sides have their reasons.

Truck Tech Questions

What is Pro Trailer Backup Assist?

An available Ford feature that lets you steer a trailer in reverse by turning a knob while you handle speed and brakes. Availability depends on trim and packages.

Does the Ford F-150 offer hands free highway driving?

Available Ford BlueCruise allows hands free driving on prequalified sections of divided highway while you keep your eyes on the road. It needs the right equipment and a paid plan after any trial. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers available Super Cruise.

Can Pro Power Onboard run my tools at a jobsite?

It's designed for that within its output limits, which vary by configuration. Check the rating on the truck you're considering against what your tools draw.

Towing Setup Questions

Do I need anything extra to tow a boat with either truck?

Many towing equipped trucks have a factory hitch receiver. You'll still need the right ball mount, ball size and wiring, plus a brake controller if the trailer has electric brakes.

What does a trailer brake controller do?

It lets the truck apply the trailer's electric brakes. Many towing packages build one into the dash, so ask whether the truck you're looking at has it.

Is towing in Texas summer heat hard on a half ton?

Heat adds strain on any truck. Use tow or haul mode if equipped, watch the gauges on long climbs, and keep up with fluid service.

Check Engine Light On in Bowie, TX? Steady vs. Flashing and What Comes Next

Service | Bowie, TX What the light is trying to say, the one thing to check before you call, and when to pull over instead of finishing the drive. It always seems to come on at the worst time. You're halfway to Wichita Falls, or backing out of the feed store in Nocona, and a little orange engine shape lights up on the dash. The truck feels fine. You start wondering if you can ignore it. Sometimes you can, for a few days. Sometimes you shouldn't drive another mile. The way the light behaves tells you which, and that's the first thing we'll cover before getting into what an engine diagnostic visit looks like in our shop. Quick answer: A steady check engine light means the engine computer logged a fault. Check that the fuel cap is tight, then book a diagnostic soon. A flashing light usually means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it checked right away. Kory Hooks Ford's service department in Bowie runs engine diagnostics on Fords and other makes. At a glance Steady light Book a diagnostic soon Flashing light Ease off, get it checked now Service line 940-338-0013 In this post What's the difference between a steady and a flashing check engine light? Can a loose gas cap really turn on the check engine light? What usually causes a check engine light? What happens during an engine diagnostic at Kory Hooks Ford? When should I stop driving with the check engine light on? Questions drivers ask What's the difference between a steady and a flashing check engine light? A steady light means the engine computer saw something outside its normal range and stored a code. It's a heads up, not an emergency. Plenty of trucks drive normally with a steady light, but the problem behind it can get worse or cost more fuel if it's left alone. A flashing light is a different story. On most vehicles it means the engine is misfiring badly enough that unburned fuel is reaching the exhaust. That fuel can overheat the catalytic converter, one of the pricier parts under the truck, in a fairly short time. If it's flashing, slow down, skip the trailer and get somewhere safe. If it goes steady again once you back off, that's a clue for the technician, not a sign it fixed itself. Can a loose gas cap really turn on the check engine light? It can. The fuel system is sealed so vapors don't escape, and the engine computer checks that seal. A cap that wasn't clicked tight after a fill up in Bowie reads as a leak, and the light comes on. Many newer Fords use a capless filler, so there's no cap to check. On those, a dirty or damaged filler neck can cause a similar fault. Look in your owner's manual if you're not sure which your truck has. Tighten the cap or close the filler and drive normally for a few days. The light won't go off right away. If it stays on after several trips, there's something else going on and it's time for a diagnostic. What usually causes a check engine light? The list is long, because the system watches a lot of sensors. The usual suspects: worn spark plugs or ignition coils, a sensor that's reading wrong, a vacuum leak, an exhaust or emissions part that isn't doing its job, or a fuel system issue. Some are small fixes. Others point to a part that's wearing out and will cost more the longer it goes. Heat, dust off caliche roads and short trips all add wear in North Texas, so a light that shows up after a hard summer isn't unusual. Light is flashing: likely an active misfire. Ease off and get it checked right away. Light plus rough running or shaking: the engine may be misfiring under load. Don't tow with it. Light plus a hot gauge or steam: pull over safely and shut it off. Call for help instead of driving on. Light plus low oil pressure warning: stop as soon as it's safe. Running without oil pressure can ruin an engine fast. Schedule a diagnostic See service specials What happens during an engine diagnostic at Kory Hooks Ford? A diagnostic starts with the code but doesn't stop there. A code tells the technician which system flagged a problem and roughly what kind. It doesn't say which part failed, and two trucks with the same code can need different repairs. That's why our service department treats the code as a starting point. The usual flow on a Ford or any other make: 1 Talk it over Your advisor asks when the light came on, whether it flashed and how the vehicle has been driving. 2 Read the codes and data The technician pulls stored codes and looks at the sensor data recorded when the fault happened. 3 Test the suspect parts They check the likely parts and wiring directly instead of replacing parts based on the code alone. 4 Explain before any repair You hear what was found, what it'll take to fix and what can wait, before work starts. A code tells the technician which system flagged a problem and roughly what kind. Engine diagnostics are on the shop's service list right alongside tune ups, general repair and preventative maintenance, and the techs are Ford trained. If a part is needed, the parts department can usually help get it ordered. When should I stop driving with the check engine light on? Stop, or get off the road as soon as it's safe, if the light is flashing, the engine is shaking or losing power, the temperature gauge is climbing, or another red warning light comes on with it. Those combinations point to damage happening right now. With a steady light and a truck that drives normally, you can usually make it home or to work and book an appointment. Hold off on long highway runs and towing until it's been looked at. Bowie driver tip If the light starts flashing on a long empty stretch of US 287 between Bowie and Wichita Falls, or out on a county road past Muenster, don't push on to the next town at highway speed. Pull over somewhere safe, call for roadside help, and let the truck come in on a hook instead of on a damaged converter. Book it your way Online, by phone, or we come get it Schedule a diagnostic online, call 940-338-0013, or use Ford Pickup & Delivery for eligible Fords and we'll pick it up at home or work, service it at the dealership and bring it back. A vehicle that can't be driven safely needs roadside help instead, and parts and repairs are billed as usual. How Pickup & Delivery works How the Light Behaves Why did my check engine light turn off by itself? + Some faults only show up under certain conditions. When the computer stops seeing the problem for a number of drives, the light can go out, but the code is usually still stored and worth reading. Why did the light come on right after I got gas? + A fuel cap that wasn't fully tightened, or a filler that didn't seal, is a common reason. Close it properly and give it a few days of normal driving. Can weather make the light come on? + Big swings in temperature or humidity can expose a weak sensor or a small leak that was already there. The weather doesn't cause the fault, it just brings it out. Code Reader Questions Can I read the code myself with a cheap scanner? + You can, and it'll give you a general idea. A code alone rarely names the failed part, so treat it as a hint and not a diagnosis. Is it okay to clear the code and keep driving? + Clearing the code turns the light off but doesn't fix anything. It also erases data the technician could have used, so it's better to leave it until it's been looked at. Why do two shops sometimes give different answers for the same code? + One code can have several causes. The difference usually comes down to how much testing was done past reading the code. Diagnostics at Kory Hooks Ford Do you diagnose check engine lights on non Ford vehicles? + The service department works on Fords and other makes, and engine diagnostics are on the service list. Call 940-338-0013 to check on your vehicle. How long does an engine diagnostic take? + That varies with the problem. A clear fault can be quick, while an intermittent one takes longer to track down. Your advisor can give you an idea when you drop it off. What are the service department hours? + Service is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and closed Saturday and Sunday. Inspection and Emissions Can the light cause trouble at a Texas emissions test? + Some Texas counties, including several around Dallas Fort Worth, still require an emissions test, and a lit check engine light generally means a fail. What applies depends on where the vehicle is registered, so check with the test station before you go. Does a check engine light affect fuel mileage? + It can. Faults involving sensors, ignition or fuel delivery often make the engine burn more fuel than it should, even if it feels normal. Can a bad catalytic converter set off the light? + A converter that isn't working well is one of the things the system watches for. It's also often the result of an earlier misfire that went on too long. Getting It to the Shop Can Ford Pickup & Delivery bring my truck in for a check engine light? + For an eligible Ford that's safe to drive, it can, depending on availability and distance. A truck that won't run or shouldn't be driven needs roadside help instead. Should I tow it in if the light is flashing? + That's often the safer call, especially from a long way out. Driving with a severe misfire risks damaging the catalytic converter and other parts. Can I drop it off before I talk to anyone? + Call the service line first or contact the store so your advisor knows what's coming in and what you've noticed. Ask before you come in Send a note or find the right number to call. Contact us What else we fix Diagnostics, tune ups, belts, hoses and more. Service department

Financing a Ford in Bowie, TX: Buying Power, Preapproval and What to Bring

Buying | Bowie, TX How to get a realistic number before you shop, what a preapproval does and doesn't promise, and the paperwork that saves you a second trip to Bowie. The truck is usually the easy part. Plenty of folks driving over from Decatur or Jacksboro have picked the trim and the color before they leave the house. What slows the day down is the money side, and a good chunk of that can be sorted out from your kitchen table. Two tools on our site will get you to a realistic number. After those come what a preapproval means and where it stops, how credit plays in, and what to have in your hand when you sit down to sign. Quick answer: Start with the What's My Buying Power tool and the payment calculator on koryhooksford.com to get a realistic range. A preapproval is a lender's early read on your credit and income, not a final loan. Bring your license, proof of income, proof of insurance and any trade paperwork, and the finance department at Kory Hooks Ford in Bowie can walk you through your options. At a glance Sales hours Mon to Fri 8 to 6, Sat 8 to 5 Sales line 940-338-0012 Location 6486 US Hwy 287 North, Bowie In this post What does the What's My Buying Power tool tell me? How should I use the payment calculator? What does preapproval mean, and what doesn't it mean? What documents should I bring to finance a vehicle? How does my credit affect financing? Questions drivers ask What does the What's My Buying Power tool tell me? It gives you a ballpark range of what you can likely spend before you talk to anybody. You fill in some basic information and the tool returns an estimate. Read the fine print on the page itself so you know exactly what it looks at. Treat the result as a shopping guide, not an approval. A lender makes the real decision later, after it sees a full application. The point of the tool is to keep you from falling for a truck that sits well outside what makes sense for your budget. It's also a quick way to sort the lot. If your range lines up with a Ford Maverick more comfortably than a loaded Ford F-150, you'd rather learn that at home than on the test drive. How should I use the payment calculator? Use it to test scenarios, not to predict your exact payment. You plug in a vehicle price, a down payment, a loan term and a rate, and it shows a monthly figure. Change one thing at a time and you'll see which input moves the payment the most. The rate you type in is a guess until a lender gives you a real one. Run it at a couple of different rates instead of the one you're hoping for. Taxes, title and fees also land on the final paperwork, so leave yourself some room. Loan length is where people get surprised. A longer term lowers the monthly number and adds to the total interest you pay. A shorter term does the opposite, and the calculator shows that tradeoff in about a minute. Check your buying power Try the payment calculator What does preapproval mean, and what doesn't it mean? A preapproval means a lender has looked at your credit and income and is willing, on paper, to lend up to a certain amount on certain terms. It tells you where you roughly stand and gives you something concrete to compare against. It isn't a final loan. The lender still verifies your income and identity, looks at the specific vehicle and sets the final terms. A preapproval also comes with an expiration date, and a lot can change between the letter and the signing. It's not a guarantee: the lender checks everything again before the loan is final. It expires: look at the date on the letter so it doesn't run out while you're still shopping. New debt can change the answer: hold off on a new credit card or another loan until the truck is bought. The vehicle matters: the age, miles and price of the one you pick can change what a lender offers. You can bring a preapproval from your own bank or credit union, or apply through the dealership and let the finance department send it to lenders. Some buyers do both and compare. What documents should I bring to finance a vehicle? Bring enough to show who you are, what you earn and that the vehicle will be insured. Every lender has its own list, so treat this as the common ground most buyers get asked for. 1 Driver's license A valid license for everyone who'll be on the loan. 2 Proof of income Recent pay stubs work for most people. Self employed buyers and farmers should bring recent tax returns or bank statements. 3 Proof of residence A utility bill or similar mail with your current address often covers it. 4 Insurance information Your agent's name and policy number. You'll need coverage on the new vehicle before you drive it home. 5 Trade paperwork The title or your lender's payoff information, the registration, and every key and remote you have. Trading something in? An online trade appraisal before you come gives you one more real number to put in the calculator. Bowie buyer tip If you run cattle or farm out toward Sunset or Saint Jo and your income comes in by the season, bring a couple of years of tax returns. Lenders read irregular income differently than a paycheck. How does my credit affect financing? Your credit history is how a lender judges the odds you'll pay the loan back. In general, a long record of on time payments and low card balances helps. Late payments, collections and maxed out cards hurt. Credit tends to shape the rate and terms you're offered more than it decides if you can buy at all. Lenders also weigh your income, the debt you already carry, your down payment and the vehicle itself, so no single score decides it. Pull your own credit reports before you apply. You're entitled to free reports from each of the three bureaus, and an error is a lot easier to fix at home than at the desk. The rate you type in is a guess until a lender gives you a real one. We can't tell you what rate you'll get, and nobody can before an application goes in. Once the finance department at Kory Hooks Ford sees the whole picture, they'll lay out the options and answer questions in plain English. Ford Pickup & Delivery After you buy, service can come to you Once your new Ford is home, Ford Pickup & Delivery can handle the trip to service. Tell us when and where, home or work, and we'll pick it up, service it at the dealership and bring it back. It's complimentary for eligible Fords, and parts and repair charges are billed as usual. How Pickup & Delivery works Down Payment and Trade Questions Do I need a down payment to finance a Ford? + That depends on the lender and your credit. Some buyers put money down and some don't. More down means a smaller loan and a lower monthly payment, which you can test in the payment calculator. Can my trade in count toward the down payment? + Trade equity often works like cash down. If your trade is worth more than you owe on it, the difference can go toward the new vehicle. What if I owe more on my trade than it's worth? + That gap is called negative equity, and it has to be handled somehow when you buy. Ask the finance department to show you how it would affect your deal before you sign anything. Credit and Application Questions Will applying for financing hurt my credit score? + A full application usually means a hard inquiry, which can lower a score slightly for a while. Scoring models often count several auto loan inquiries in a short window as one shopping event. Can I finance with little or no credit history? + First time buyers often can, though the terms may reflect the thin file. A cosigner, a larger down payment or a less expensive vehicle are common ways people make it work. What if a lender turns me down? + One decline isn't always the last word. Ask what drove it, check your reports for mistakes, and talk with the finance department about what other routes might exist. Online Tool Questions Is the calculator's number what I'll pay each month? + Probably not to the dollar. The calculator only knows what you type in, and your final payment depends on the approved rate, the term, taxes, fees and any trade or cash down. Can I start a credit application online? + The finance page on koryhooksford.com is where to begin the process online. If you'd rather talk it through first, call sales at 940-338-0012. Should I add a cosigner? + That's a personal call with real weight for the other person, since they're responsible if payments stop. Talk it over with them first, then ask how it changes the application. Planning Your Visit How long does financing take at the dealership? + It varies with the lender and how complete your paperwork is. Walking in with your documents and trade information ready shortens the wait more than anything else you can control. When is the sales department open? + Sales is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to 5 PM. It's closed Sunday. Can I do most of the prep before I drive over? + A lot of it, yes. You can check your buying power, run payment scenarios, get a trade estimate and start on the finance page from home. Final verification and signing happen at the store. After You Buy Can I pay off my Ford loan early? + Many auto loans allow it, but terms vary by lender. Read the contract or ask about prepayment before you sign. Can I refinance later? + That's between you and a lender. Some owners refinance after their credit improves, and your current lender can give you a payoff amount if you go that way. Does Ford Pickup & Delivery cost extra on a financed truck? + How you paid for the truck doesn't change it. The pickup and delivery is complimentary for eligible Fords, depending on availability and distance, and parts and repairs are billed as usual. Ford technician replacing a vehicle battery during battery service in Bowie, TX

Battery Replacement in Bowie, TX: What a Texas Summer Does to Your Battery

Service | Bowie, TX Why heat wears out batteries, the signs that show up in August, and how to tell a weak battery from a bad alternator or starter. Most batteries that quit in North Texas quit for a reason that started months earlier. A June and July of 100 degree afternoons, with the truck parked in the sun at a job site or the sale barn, wears the inside of a battery down even when it seems to start fine every morning. Then one August afternoon it clicks instead of cranking, often somewhere inconvenient, like a parking lot in Wichita Falls with the kids in the back seat. August is a good month to get ahead of it, so we'll go through what heat does to a battery and what we check when you bring it to our service drive in Bowie. Quick answer: Heat speeds up the wear inside a car battery, so late summer is when a lot of them give out. Slow cranking, dim lights at idle, corrosion on the terminals or a battery that's several years old are good reasons to get it tested. Kory Hooks Ford's service department at 6486 US Hwy 287 North in Bowie tests and replaces batteries on Fords and other makes. At a glance Service line 940-338-0013 Parts counter opens 7 AM weekdays Service hours Mon to Fri, 8 AM to 5 PM In this post Why does Texas heat wear out car batteries? What are the signs my battery is going bad? Is it the battery, the alternator or the starter? What happens during a battery test at Kory Hooks Ford? Why do newer Ford trucks need the right battery? Questions drivers ask Why does Texas heat wear out car batteries? A car battery makes power through a chemical reaction, and heat speeds that reaction up. That also speeds up wear on the plates inside and can evaporate the fluid. Under the hood on a July afternoon, a battery is working in a hot box. The damage doesn't show right away. Heat weakens the battery over the summer, and the failure often comes later, on the first cool morning in fall. That's why a battery that seemed fine in July can leave you stuck in October. Short trips make it worse. A run from the house to the feed store and back may not give the alternator enough time to fully recharge what the starter used. What are the signs my battery is going bad? The most common sign is a slow crank. The engine turns over lazily before it catches. Dim headlights at idle or a radio that resets can point the same way. Age matters too. Many batteries last somewhere around three to five years, and in hot climates the low end of that range is common. If yours is getting up there and you don't know when it was last tested, it's due. Clicking with no crank: the battery may be too weak to turn the starter, or the starter itself may be failing. White or blue crust on the terminals: corrosion can block current. Don't scrape it with bare hands, since battery acid burns. Swollen or cracked case: heat damage. Have it replaced and don't try to jump it. Bowie driver tip If your truck sits in an open pasture or a gravel lot off US 287 all day, park nose toward the shade when you can, even a little. A cooler engine bay helps. And if the truck only makes short runs into town, take the long way home on State Highway 59 once a week so the alternator can catch up. Is it the battery, the alternator or the starter? These three get blamed for each other all the time. The battery stores power, the starter uses it to turn the engine over, and the alternator recharges the battery once the engine is running. A few clues help. If a jump start gets you going and the vehicle runs fine until the next morning, the battery is the usual suspect. If it dies again while you're driving, or the lights flicker and dim as you go, look at the alternator. One loud click with plenty of battery power, or a grinding noise when you turn the key, often points to the starter. The battery warning light is a little misleading. It usually means the charging system isn't putting out what it should, which can be the alternator, a belt or wiring. Alternators, starters and batteries are all on our service department list, so one visit can sort it out. Book a battery test Order a battery What happens during a battery test at Kory Hooks Ford? A battery test takes the guessing out of it. Our Ford trained technicians check the whole starting and charging system, since a new battery won't last long if the alternator behind it is weak. The usual order: 1 Look it over Check the case, terminals and cables for corrosion, cracks, swelling or loose clamps. 2 Test the battery A tester measures how well the battery holds a charge and delivers power under load. 3 Check the charging system With the engine running, the alternator output and the belt that drives it get checked. 4 Check the starter if needed If the battery passes but cranking is still slow, the starter is next. 5 Go over the results Your service advisor tells you what passed, what failed and what can wait. Heat weakens the battery over the summer, and the failure often comes later, on the first cool morning in fall. If the battery needs replacing, we'll match it to what your vehicle calls for. That matters more on newer trucks than it used to. Why do newer Ford trucks need the right battery? Newer trucks ask a lot more of a battery. Many have Auto Start-Stop, which shuts the engine off at a light and restarts it when you lift off the brake. That means many more starts per day than an older truck sees, and those systems are usually built around a specific type of battery, often an AGM battery, made for that kind of cycling. Then there's everything else that draws power: big touchscreens, heated seats, cameras, and modules that stay awake after you lock the doors. The wrong battery can mean warning messages, Auto Start-Stop that quits working, or a short life for the new battery. Some newer vehicles also need the system told that a new battery went in, so the truck charges it correctly. The right battery type and size for your model is listed in the owner's manual, and our parts counter can look it up by VIN if you plan to do it yourself. Book it your way Online, by phone, or from your driveway Book a battery test online, call 940-338-0013, or set up Ford Pickup & Delivery for an eligible Ford and we'll pick it up at home or work, service it at the dealership and bring it back. Pickup & Delivery is complimentary, parts and repairs are billed as usual, and a vehicle that won't start needs a roadside call instead. How Pickup & Delivery works Battery Life Questions How long does a car battery last in Texas? + Many last around three to five years, and heat tends to push them toward the short end. Driving habits, short trips and the electrical load on the vehicle all play a part. Does cold weather or hot weather kill batteries faster? + Heat does more of the damage. Cold just exposes it, because a weak battery has a harder time cranking a cold engine, so the failure often shows up on the first chilly morning. Can a battery die from sitting too long? + It can. Modern vehicles draw a little power even when they're off, so a truck parked for a couple of weeks may not start. A battery maintainer helps if it sits often. Jump Start and Roadside Questions Is it safe to jump start my own vehicle? + Follow the steps in your owner's manual, since some newer vehicles have specific jump points under the hood. A swollen, cracked or leaking battery should never be jumped. Should I replace a battery after one jump start? + Not automatically. Lights left on can drain a healthy battery. If it needed a jump with no clear cause, have it tested. My vehicle won't start at all. Can you pick it up? + Ford Pickup & Delivery is for vehicles that can be driven, so a no start needs a roadside event or a tow. Once it's here, our technicians can find the cause. Battery Service at Kory Hooks Ford Do you replace batteries on vehicles that aren't Fords? + The service department works on Fords and other makes. Call 940-338-0013 and tell them what you drive. How long does a battery test take? + The test itself doesn't take long. Book an appointment so the technician has time to check the alternator and starter too if the battery isn't the whole story. Can I buy a battery and install it myself? + You can. The parts department opens at 7 AM on weekdays and can match the right battery to your vehicle. Check your owner's manual for any reset steps after the swap. Battery Care Questions How do I keep my battery terminals clean? + Look at them at each oil change. Light corrosion can be cleaned with the right tools and gloves, and a technician can clean and protect them during service. Do accessories like light bars drain the battery? + Anything wired straight to the battery can draw power with the truck off if it's not installed right. A slow drain test can track down the source. Will a bad battery hurt my alternator? + A weak battery can make the alternator work harder, so testing both at the same visit makes sense. Starting Problem Questions Why does my truck crank fine some days and slow on others? + A battery on its way out often struggles after the truck sits overnight or in the heat, then seems fine after a long drive. Inconsistent starts are a reason to test it now. What does a ticking sound when I turn the key mean? + Rapid ticking or clicking often means there isn't enough power reaching the starter. It could be a weak battery, a loose or corroded cable, or the starter. Why did my Auto Start-Stop stop working? + Many vehicles turn the feature off when the battery is low or aging, to protect your ability to restart. A battery test is a good first step.
