Headlights that are in top condition help keep you and others safe on the road. If you’re having any problems with yours, it’s time to think about a visit to your Ford dealership for some new headlights.

Understanding Headlight Options

Halogen Headlights

These are the most common type of headlight and have been used in vehicles for decades. They are affordable and easy to replace. Halogen bulbs produce light by heating a tungsten filament. While they are energy efficient, they do not last as long as other types.

LED (Light-Emitting Diode) Headlights

More energy efficient and longer lasting than halogen bulbs, LED headlight bulbs should last for three years or more. LEDs provide a bright, white light and are quickly becoming a popular choice for their crisp light. However, they can be more expensive upfront compared to halogen bulbs.

HID (High-Intensity Discharge) Headlights

Also known as xenon headlights, HID headlights also offer brighter light and longer lifespan than typical halogen bulbs. Instead of a filament, HID headlights use a capsule of gases. Often installed on high-end vehicles, HID headlights are some of the brightest and most expensive headlights you can find.

Signs You Need New Headlights From the Ford Dealership

Dimming Lights

As they age, headlights often become dimmer. This dimming can happen over time so gradually that you may not notice. Once you realize your lights aren’t doing their job anymore, it’s time to replace your headlights.

Flickering Lights

If your headlights are flickering on and off or brightening and then dimming without any direction from you, there’s something wrong. It may be a loose wire, a dying bulb, or an electrical problem in your car. Flickering, unreliable headlights can be a safety hazard that should be checked out right away.

One Bulb Has Burned Out

If a bulb has burned out, it should be replaced, and the sooner the better. Driving with one headlight out is both dangerous and illegal, and it leaves you without a backup if the other bulb dies, too.

Cloudy, Discolored Lenses

Headlights can become cloudy or yellowed over time, limiting the amount of light that they can produce. This damage, caused by exposure to UV rays and severe weather, can sometimes be reduced by a thorough cleaning. If the damage is too severe, however, your headlights should be replaced.

Visible Damage

Any cracks, chips, or damage to the headlight can cause them to perform poorly. If you notice any moisture inside the lens, that means a crack or damaged seal has let water get in. Water in your headlight can cause further electrical problems, so visibly damaged headlights should be replaced right away.

Frequently Replacing Bulbs

While bulbs are designed to burn out eventually, headlights that burn out repeatedly or too soon might signal electrical problems in your car.
